"This trip to Japan was a masterpiece of an itinerary which provided something that blew me away every single day. Thanks to all of you for caring about me as a person, putting your best foot forward to insure my happiness and giving me experiences unlike anything else that I had ever seen or done."

Program Highlights & Itinerary

A dream trip to Japan, specifically curated for young adults (18 - 32) with Asperger's, Autism, Anxiety & ADHD (Diagnosed or not). We'll stay in calmer areas so we can venture into the crazy amazingness of Japan, but also get plenty of time to decompress and chill. Most of our travelers are in their 20's and early 30's, and this age range is who we curate the trip for.

Meet Up & Prepare In Los Angeles

Day 1

Arrive between 3-4 PM to our hotel near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Our guides are happy to pick you up from LAX upon request, or you are welcome to take the free hotel shuttle from the airport to our hotel on your own.

Orientation

Meet up with your fellow travelers and guides for the first time in person, where we will go over some important information regarding the upcoming flight (and how to minimize jet-lag) and get to know each other better.

Welcome Dinner

Enjoy a nice meal in the company of your fellow travelers before retiring to your hotel room in order to be fresh for the flight to Tokyo the next day.
Los Angeles Sunset LAX

Nerd Out In Tokyo

Day 2-5

Arrive in Tokyo, Japan. We're staying in the somewhat quieter area of Shinagawa that still has easy access to all that Tokyo offers. This allows us to go TO the crazy but not be IN the crazy. Highlights include seeing the lifesize moving Gundam statue & Studio Ghibli clock as we pass on a train, playing in Japanese arcades, shopping for anime & manga merch in Akihabara and much much more.

There will be plenty of down time as well, where your WanderRock guides will be available to help coordinate activities that the group chooses, so if you have something you've always wanted to do in Tokyo, you will have the time to do it.

Highlights include...

TeamLabs Borderless

Immerse your body and mind in borderless, interactive art in this vast, complex, three-dimensional 107,000 square foot art installation full of mind-bending and trippy visual experiences.

Shopping & Arcades In Akihabara & Shinjuku

Welcome to the Otaku mecca! This is the central place for ANYTHING Anime & Manga related. Here you can find arcades, shops, cafes, the biggest tech and toy store in the world and more to satisfy your inner nerd. If you'd like to ship your purchases back to the US, your WanderRock guides can assist.

Yes, We Can Go To That Anime Cafe

We've blocked off some unstructured time where our guides would be happy to assist you with any additional activities you'd like to do, including Anime Cafes or additional attractions.

Cross The Shibuya Scramble and See The Godzilla Statue Hanging off of A Building on Godzilla Street

Cross the famous Shibuya Scramble where 3,000 people cross at one time as you make your way back to Shinjuku to see the Godzilla statue "about" to demolish a building.

Chill Out In Kinosaki

Day 6-9

Continue onward by Shinkansen bullet train and rapid express to the coastal town of Kinosaki Onsen, famous for its healing hot spring waters. On the way, you might spot a glimpse of Mt. Fuji (if mother nature cooperates).

We'll be staying in a traditional Japanese Inn called a Ryokan, so it's important that you familiarize yourself with the differences in this accommodation type. (See the Accommodations section in the trip notes section for details.)

You'll get the opportunity to wear a Yukata, a Japanese robe, as you stroll the town and admire its artisan shops, traditional architecture and peaceful ambiance.

Highlights include...

Caligraphy Training

In the upstairs of a house turned into a Studio Ghibli shop, you'll learn the traditional art of caligraphy. After instruction and practice, you'll produce a finished piece you can take home.

Learn From A Straw Craft Master

One of only a few remaining in Japan, you'll be personally instructed by a master in the art of making intricate patterns of woven straw. After a short lesson, you'll make a small wooden box with a decorative straw craft top, which is yours to take home.

A Traditional Ryokan & Lavish Dinner

Stay in a traditional Japanese inn with Tatami floors and Japanese Futons, while strolling the grounds in your Yukata. Our first evening also features a lavish multi-course Japanese set meal.

The 7 Onsens of Kinosaki

Kinosaki is famous for its 7 public hot springs, each with its own style and medicial properties. As a guest in a Ryokan at Kinosaki, you'll have free use of all of them to relax, ease your tensions and enjoy the surrounding nature.
Dinner in Kinosaki An Onsen

Deep Dive In Osaka & The Kansai Region

Day 10-15

Continue by Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto. Over the next five days we'll explore the Kansai Region, and in addition to exploring Osaka (the food capital of Japan), we'll also visit Nara and Kyoto.

As with Tokyo, we'll have plenty of unstructured time, so if there is something you'd like to do in Osaka, Kyoto or the surrounding region that you did not get a chance to, we'll be able to help you make that happen.

Highlights include...

Monkey Park & Bamboo Forest

Visit the awe-inspiring Arashiama bamboo forest, and stroll amongst the giant towering stalks of bamboo, then optionally take a short but steep climb up a hill to visit the nearby monkey park, where wild monkeys live and come down to be fed.

Samurai Training

We've been invited to join in a rare, one of a kind opportunity to train with real modern Samurai warrior monks for the day. This isn't a normal tourist experience. This is a full day, real-deal martial arts training class with some of the best sword masters alive today. During this time we will get a hands-on experience as we learn their ways of meditation and using a Katana sword.

Bowing Deer & Buddhist Temple Complexes In Nara

Be surrounded by the free roaming deer of Nara Park which are designated "Natural Monuments" of the city, and watch as they bow in greeting (but only when you offer them a specific cracker). Nara is also where Buddhism started to flourish in Japan, so there are many monuments, temples and shrines to visit.

Participate In A Tea Ceremony & Visit A World Famous Shrine

Partake in a matcha tea ceremony performed by a master tea maker, then try your hand at making your own tea. We'll also visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, home to thousands upon thousands of red torii gates.

"The trip I took to Japan with WanderRock was one of the best experiences of my life, I was able to make so many new friends that have similar struggles to me which was so exciting. The guides were great enabling us to experience a new culture which might otherwise be overwhelming, and in a way that made us feel comfortable."

The WanderRock Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to follow our main ethos: Putting more life in our travelers lives. We believe that travel is one of the best ways to gain real world skills that will last a lifetime.

Those skills include...

Executive Functioning Skills

Travelers will learn & gain confidence in the practical application of logistical skills that they can take into every day life. These skills aren't something that can be taught in a classroom or by reading, so we emphasize practical experience whenever possible.

For example, travelers might have to research dinner options, negotiate with peers, check to see if the restaurant fits within their budget for the week, and plan how to get there on public transportation.

Sequencing and Processing

Gathering information, prioritizing that information and then acting on it.

Time & Money

Budgeting, time management and practicing value judgements.

Problem Solving

Thinking through the steps required to achieve a goal, readjusting expectations, and being persistent.

Perspective & Wisdom Building

One of the great things about travel is that by experiencing different cultures, it gives our travelers a new sense of perspective & a greater wisdom as they go about their daily life. Our program uses deep cultural immersion & the physical environment to give our travelers a greater understanding of themselves, their worldview and the people around them.

Building Empathy & Creating Tolerance

Seeing people as individuals with their own struggles, successes and preferences.

Re-Aligning Personal Stories

Creating new self identities, building confidence & self esteem and shifting the personal stories we tell about our efficacy in the world.

Becoming More Flexible

Moving from black and white thinking to grey areas by experiencing different cultural norms & practicing tolerance.
A Shinto Shrine

Self Care & Emotional Regulation

Being out on the road teaches our travelers a lot about their basic needs, and our program highlights those needs and helps our travelers make good decisions about eating, relaxation, sleep, hydration & more, based on their own felt sense of checking in with themselves.

Emotional Capacity & Vagal Tone

Increasing resilience to stressors and building the capacity to tolerate difference.

Deep Relaxation

Practicing meditation, mindfulness, stillness and other aspects of unwinding.

Bodily Needs

Checking in with your body to know when to eat, sleep, rest, drink, etc.

Social & Community Engagement

Our travelers will have many, many opportunities to connect with their peers and the people of the various communities we visit, which will allow them to practice social skills & community engagement in a safe, welcoming way.

Sharing & Advocating

Travelers will practice advocating for their wants & needs in the group, and sharing ideas, concerns & preferences with others.

Interpersonal Skills

Building leadership, team & communication skills in a wide variety of settings & experiences.

Building Motivation

Understanding desires, and learning to rally a group around a common goal.

What's Included With My Program Fee?

Your program fee covers most of the expenses on the trip like flights, hotels, meals, activities and transit. The only extra cost you need to plan for is getting to and from our start point in the US, alcohol if you decide to partake and are of legal drinking age, and any souvenirs you wish to purchase.

Here's the details of everything that is included...

Travel, Activities & Food

Your fee covers all travel activities during the itinerary. Unlike 99% of the group tour operators out there, we don't upsell you or try to sell extra experiences.

Nightly accommodations

Our accommodations tend to focus on local culture and unique styles, so we generally don't stay in chain hotels like a Marriott. If you are a solo traveler, you'll be paired with a roommate the same gender as yourself. Couples are welcome to share a room.

All Planned Activities & Attraction Tickets

Whether that is visiting an epic museum in Florence, taking Samurai classes in Kyoto or riding a zip line in the Swiss Alps.

Food & Snacks

This covers breakfast, lunch and dinner plus snacks, drinks & extras. While we welcome responsible drinking of alcohol, it is not covered by your trip fee.

All Transportation (Including International Flights)

Round-trip international flights, and all ground transit once in our destination.

Multiple Experienced Guides

Our guides have a deep love for taking people on trips to new places. They're experienced travelers, speak multiple languages, have been trained in first-aid and CPR and understand the unique challenges that come with taking neuro-diverse individuals abroad.

No One Gets Lost

Our guides always know where to go and have deep knowledge of the local area. They'll make sure no one gets lost.

Empathetic & Caring

We're used to working with first-time travelers, folks who have a bit of anxiety and a different way of looking at the world.

Neuro-Diverse Themselves

Most of our guides are diagnosed with some combination of Asperger's/Autism/ADHD themselves, have overcome most of their issues and would be happy to share their wisdom & experiences.

Life Coaching & Facilitated Friendship-Making

Our curriculum involves much more than just travel. With group discussions to process the day and ice-breaking events to help everyone get to know each other, our program is designed to be impactful, empowering and one of the best experiences you'll have in a very long time.

New Skills & Practical Applications

Our travelers learn new skills like emotional regulation, financial planning, flexibility & problem solving, as taught by our staff before, during & after the trip. Then they get daily practice using those skills in real-world situations.

New Friends

We help all of our travelers get to know each other, find who they click with and deepen their relationships effortlessly.

Pre Trip Orientation & Chat

Starting about a month before each trip begins we connect all of our travelers togetheron a zoom call and in our discord chat to get to know each other, teach travel skills and help allay perfectly normal pre-travel jitters and anxieties.

Advice, Wisdom & Coaching

Our guides have been through a lot, and are more than happy to share their thoughts & perspectives with our travelers in order to help them grow, get unstuck and lead more fulfilling lives.

Our Application Process

We require that all potential travelers go through our application process to ensure that there is a good fit amongst the people in the group and that everyone is going to have a good time. We don't want anyone to get to our destination and then say "Oops this was a bad idea to come."

Application Process

1. Apply For The Dates You Want

This short application is where we'll learn more about you, your concerns and what you are most excited for during the trip. It should only take a few minutes to fill out.

2. Schedule Your Zoom Call

On our call together we'll answer any questions you may have, make sure you are a good fit for our trip and walk you through the itinerary.

3. Determination & Payment

Once we determine that you are a good fit, we'll take payment in the form of a 60% deposit. (Full payment due 60 days out). We accept credit card & check and you can see our cancellation policy here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for? Contact us.

For Travelers

Am I too old to come?
Our trips are geared towards young adults, and the other travelers in your group will likely be from the same demographic. We recognize that defining 'young adult' can be complex, especially given the diverse pace of maturity amongst our target population. That being said, most of the people that join us on our trips are in their 20's and early 30's.
We believe that age doesn't solely define one's capacity for adventure, yet it's important to understand that our trips typically reflect a youthful energy, dynamic, and pace. As we aim to curate an engaging and cohesive group dynamic, we encourage prospective travelers to consider if their own expectations and comfort level align with these factors before choosing to embark on the journey with us.
Who are the other people going on this trip?
Broadly speaking, they are other young adults who are also interested in getting more life in their life. We carefully screen everyone through an application process to make sure that they are a good fit for both the trip and the group that is forming to make sure that everyone will get along, have a great time and be able to handle the stressors of international travel.
It's also worth noting that our spring & summer trips tend to skew younger, and our fall and winter trips tend to skew a bit older.
If I am traveling as a couple, can we stay in the same room together?
Absolutely! We have zero problem with this. We treat all of our travelers as the adults that they are and have zero issues with couples rooming together.
How do I know that I'm going to have a good time?
The number 1 key to you having a good time is a willingness to be flexible. Traveling to new places is ALWAYS different than you imagine it to be in your head, because no matter the amount of pictures, videos & guidebooks you look at, the only way to truly know a place is to go there.
So if you are someone who has a strong idea of what you are expecting, but you aren't willing to change or re-evaluate that idea then you might not have a good time. But as long as you remain flexible and take the day as it actually is, instead of how you think it should be, then this will be the trip of a lifetime.
Especially in Japan, where the culture is distinctly not western, it is important to be accepting and willing to try new things. Remember: you are a guest in another culture.
What is the cancellation Policy?
If you cancel some or all portions of your booking cancellation fees will apply. A cancellation will only be effective when we receive written confirmation of the cancellation. If you cancel a trip:
Up to 61 days prior to departure, there will be 50% refunds.
60 days or less prior to departure, then we will retain 100% of trip cost as paid by you in connection with the booking, however you are entitled to a credit toward a future trip, less any unrecoverable costs incurred by us.
If you leave a trip for any reason after it has commenced we are not obliged to make any refunds for unused services. If you fail to join a trip, join it after departure, or leave it prior to its completion, no refund will be made. The above cancellation fees are in addition to fees which may be levied by accommodation providers, travel agents or third party tour and transport operator fees.

For Parents

What training & experience do the WanderRock guides have?
All WanderRock guides are thoroughly background-checked and trained in First Aid, CPR & conflict resolution skills, in addition to the obvious of detailed knowledge of the itinerary and local areas we will be visiting. All of our guides have extensive experience in international travel and leading group tours, and are multi-lingual.
We try to keep our guides the same ages as our travelers because we aim to have the feel of a group of peers traveling, rather than a dynamic of the adult authority and the children that follow.
What if my kid isn't 18 yet? Can they still come?
On a case by case basis, we allow mature teenagers to travel with us. There is a small surcharge due to increased insurance costs on our end. If this is something you are interested in, pick your dates then fill out the application and we will be in touch to discuss.
What outcomes can I expect my child to get out of a WanderRock trip?
Our trips are designed around our main ethos of putting more life into our travelers lives. In plain English, that means that, for us, travel is just the delivery mechanism to cause maximum maturity, growth, perspective & life experience in the minimum amount of time.
Our curriculum is focused around having our travelers gain 4 distinct types of skills: executive functioning skills, perspective & wisdom building skills, self care & emotional regulation skills and social & community engagement skills.
Can you explain more about the trip orientation?
Starting a few weeks before our trip starts, we'll get all of our travelers together via zoom to get to know each other and go over logistics such as what to bring. We also have a discord server where all travelers can meet, chat and stay in contact.
How big is the group on each trip?
Our programs have a minimum of 6 travelers and a maximum of 16, with 3-4 guides depending on group size. We aim for a 4:1 ratio between travelers and guides.
What makes a WanderRock trip different then other travel programs?
A WanderRock trip is unlike any experience out there. We believe that new experiences, deep connections to place & people, and experiencing different ways of life are some of the best ways to improve your life, get unstuck and build life skills. Unlike most other programs that have a therapeutic focus and are staffed by therapists, doctors and other medical professionals, our WanderRock guides are travelers, outdoor adventure education guides, former private tour leaders and more.
Our trips are unique because we focus on:
Small Groups: All WanderRock trips are a maximum of 16 travelers and 4 guides, which allows for a tight knit social & support net to form. No one will get lost in the crowd with our 4:1 ratio.
"Lived It" Personal Experience: WanderRock was founded by neuro-diverse people who deeply understand what its like to live with Asperger's, ADD, Anxiety, Depression, etc... because we've lived it ourselves. We take that personal experience into consideration when designing our trips so that they induce growth and provide challenge... but aren't completely overwhelming or overstimulating.
Pre Trip Orientation: Starting shortly before each trip starts we connect all of our travelers togetheron a zoom call and in our discord chat to get to know each other, teach travel skills and help allay perfectly normal pre-travel jitters and anxieties.
Is there someone available to pick my child up from the airport and make sure they get on their departing flight after the trip concludes?
Yes, upon request we would be happy to pick them up from the airport and help them navigate the airport once we are back in the US.

Important Trip Notes, Health & Safety

Please read these important trip notes as they contain details and guidance on important things like passports, Covid restrictions, border entry requirements & more. By applying to join us on this trip, you are signaling that you have read, understood and agreed to these notes.

Covid-19

Currently there are no covid restrictions on this trip. You do not need to be vaccinated to join us, nor will we be asking for a pre-trip covid test or proof of vaccination.

Passports & Visas

A valid passport with an expiration date AT LEAST 6 months out from the END of the trip is required. Please make sure the name on your passport is your full legal name & matches the name on any airline tickets you book separately (such as to/from our start or ending destinations).

Please make a copy of your passport and other important documents, and bring 1 copy with you, leave 1 copy at home, and email yourself 1 copy.

United States Citizens do not require a Visa to travel to Japan, but there are duration limits that apply for how long you can stay in Japan in a given year period, so if you have previously been to Japan within the past 365 days before the trip start date, please let us know.

Ultimately, you are responsible for ensuring that you meet and comply with foreign entry requirements, health requirements and that you possess the appropriate travel documents. Contact us if you need assistance.

Itinerary Changes

Due to conditions such as weather, transportation schedules, public holidays, availability or other factors, we may make changes to this itinerary before or during the trip. We will advise you of any such changes as soon as possible.

Roommates

You will have roommates on this trip. You will be sharing a room with at least 1 other person (sometimes more than 1). We'd recommend bringing earplugs & an eye mask in case they snore.

We'll do our best to make sure your roommates are the same sex as you and in 99% of times that will be the case, however sometimes due to logistics outside of our control, we cannot guarantee this. (On a past trip we arrived at a hotel in Paris, on the hottest day on record ever, to be told that all the rooms with 3 beds in them didn't have working AC. So we had to choose between different sleeping arrangements than planned... or no Air Conditioning.)

Accommodations

We will be staying in a wide variety of accommodation types during our trip. It's important to be aware that our accommodations may differ very significantly from what you are used to at home, as we tend to stay in local style accommodations in order to experience the local culture. This is especially true in Japan, where Japanese-style accommodations differ substantially from western-style hotel rooms.

Please read the below descriptions of our accommodations in detail to avoid surprises. Depending on transportation schedules, we may need to stay the night in a hotel by an airport or train station as well.

Los Angeles, CA: We'll stay in a standard, chain hotel such as a Hilton.

Tokyo, Japan: We will be staying in a modern, western style hotel.

Kinosaki, Japan: We're staying in a Ryokan, a traditional Japanese Inn. The rooms themselves are small, with room for a small table and chairs. During the evening those furnishings are pushed aside, and sleeping futons are made up in that space.

That means that, although still very comfortable, your bed may be slightly firmer than you are used to, and will be lower than a traditional western-style bed. You should free of major back problems and easily able to get on and off the floor.

While all rooms contain a sink and toilet, you will not have a shower or bath in your individual room. It is traditional in a Japanese Ryokan to use the Onsen, or public hot spring bath. Don't worry, we'll guide you through the process, and you'll quickly realize it is quite enjoyable and relaxing. Due to the length of our stay and for the comfort of all travelers, we expect everyone to maintain proper hygiene.

Kyoto & Osaka, Japan: We'll be staying in a modern Japanese hotel with western beds and a full bathroom.

Traveling With Other People

Life on the road means that you may not get as much privacy as you are used to back home. You'll be sharing a room with at least 1 other traveler and will be expected to keep your sleeping area neat (ish). You may only have a locker to put your things in at times (depending on the accommodation type). You'll also be expected to practice daily hygiene (brush teeth, shower, deodorant) so that you don't cause discomfort to your fellow travelers.

Downtime

On most days, our daily itinerary is split into morning/afternoon/evening periods and we aim to allow for daily downtime during one of these periods every day (excluding travel days of course). This is your time to do laundry, call home, play games with your fellow travelers, explore the area, do some shopping or whatever else suits you.

Transportation

This trip involves flights to and from Japan, which is on average 11.5 hours long each way. You'll be in Economy class and there may or may not be entertainment options available on the flight, so plan accordingly. On the ground, we will primarily be traveling by train, including Japan's famous Shinkansen bullet train, and will have a few train trips that are 2+ hours in length. You should be in good health and easily able to sit for multiple hours at a time.

Money

A WanderRock trip includes daily expenses such as food, snacks, lodging & transportation, but you should still bring some extra cash for emergencies, shopping & optional activities. We also highly recommend not bringing one large sum of money, but having some cash on hand and access to an ATM card to withdraw more as necessary.

Emergency Contingencies

We plan for every known contingency, but unexpected things can and do occur when traveling. If such emergencies occur, we'll do our best to resolve the situation. This may include re-routing part of our itinerary due to natural disaster or health concern, extending or shortening the length of our stay in certain locations or other remedies as the situation requires.

Whatever happens, you can be assured we'll keep everyone traveling with us (and family back at home) advised of the situation, and will communicate as much as possible. Please see "Problems & Emergency Contact Info" below for more details about personal issues such as Illness, Meltdowns or Injury.

Commissions

Unlike 99% of the tourism & travel industry, we do not get commissions from local vendors for bringing our travelers to them for purchases. This allows us to recommend activities based on genuine fit, rather than who will make us the most money. Our all inclusive pricing model means that the way we make our living is up front and honest. We aren't going to upsell you during the trip at all.

Carry-On Backpack Required

We require all of our travelers to pack for Carry-On only, which means no checked bags are allowed. You should plan on packing 7 days worth of clothes, as there will be plenty of laundry opportunities along our itinerary. That means that we require you bring a backpack of no more than 40L in size as your main bag. You'll find it much easier to handle a backpack than a rolling suitcase and we will provide guidance on specific brands, sizing & more in our packing guide, which will be sent to you after enrollment.

Laundry

Laundry services may not be available every day of the trip. Your guides will advise you on the best days & times to do laundry, and assist as needed.

Climate Information

Japan has humid and tropical summers, and cold and snowy winters. Depending on the time of year of your trip, you should pack accordingly. There will be opportunities to buy sunscreen once we arrive in Japan. Because it can rain suddenly and without warning, a lightweight and packable raincoat is essential. We aren't going to stop just because it is raining!

WanderRock Guides

Our WanderRock guides are here to help you have the best trip you possibly can. They come from many walks of life, from yoga instructors to outdoor adventure guides to people who have worked helping college kids be more independent, and bring their expertise with them to help guide you through the trip.

Unlike a tour guide, they are not deeply knowledgeable about specific touristic attractions & the history of an area, but are trained in things like first aid & CPR, conflict resolution, peacekeeping and basic outdoor survival.

On travel days, you will be split into different groups, each with 4 travelers and 1 guide, and you are expected to follow their instructions on trains, planes, buses and other modes of transit.

Group Behavior

We expect all travelers to behave in a way that is respectful of the cultures, places & people that we are interacting with, and to be respectful of the other travelers and their preferences. Should issues arise, our guides are trained in conflict resolution and will do their best to diffuse and resolve the situation.

In extreme situations where a travelers behavior is a consistent and major disruption to the group, or in cases of concern for the health & safety of any of our travelers, our guides may, at their discretion, remove a traveler from the group, without a refund. In that case, we will escort the traveler to the nearest international airport and assist them with arranging for transit back home.

Behaviors That Aren't Tolerated

Abuse & Bullying: Everyone has the right to feel safe & accepted when on our trips. For that reason, verbal abuse, physical abuse, bullying and sexual harassment focused on any person (whether thats a fellow traveler, guide or local person) will not be tolerated, and our trained guides will deal with those situations swiftly. Should a traveler be found to be in violation of this policy, they will be removed from the group and escorted to the nearest international airport once arrangements have been made for them to travel back home.

Sexual Relations: No sexual relations are permitted between guides & travelers or travelers and other travelers.

Sex Tourism: Patronizing sex workers isn't tolerated on any WanderRock trip. Anyone who is found to be in violation of this policy will be removed from the group and escorted to the nearest international airport once arrangements have been made for them to travel back home.

Drugs & Alcohol: Use or possession of illegal drugs (as determined by the laws of the country we are in) is not tolerated on any WanderRock trip. If you choose to drink alcohol, you must be at least the legal age to do so in that country, and we expect you to do so in a responsible manner.

Recklessness: We expect all of our travelers to maintain situational awareness and keep themselves safe. Any traveler who has consistently demonstrated an extreme lack of judgement when it comes to keeping themselves safe will be removed from the group and escorted to the nearest international airport once arrangements have been made for them to travel back home, for their own safety.

Note that we are talking about "walks out into the middle of traffic repeatedly" type recklessness, not "forgets to lock the hotel room door".

Rigors of Travel

International travel can be a stressful & amazingly exciting experience at the same time. All travelers need to make sure they are ready to handle the rigors of jet lag, long plane flights, and disruptions to their normal routine, and need to be healthy enough to go on the trip.

Flexibility is a key trait that will help you have a great time. You may have to let go of some preferences you have back home, as we may not be able to accommodate your requests, and may have to change our itinerary at the last moment due to unforeseen circumstances.

Food & Dietary Requirements

When traveling with us, you'll experience the vast array of food available in the world. Some of it will be extremely foreign, and some extremely familiar. We'll do our best to work with your preferences and make sure that you always have something that you can eat, but can't make any guarantees.

If you have certain food allergies, we'll work to the best of our abilities to help you eat food that is safe for you, but can't make any guarantees for many reasons, including language barriers, lack of control of the supply, cultural differences, and lack of choices. If having a certain type of food is a life or death situation for you, this probably isn't the trip for you.

That being said, the locations we are going to are big enough to generally provide as much choice as you are used to at home.

Vaccines & Diseases

On this trip, you'll need to take the same sort of precautions you do at home. Make sure to wash your hands often, use hand sanitizer, and maintain proper hygiene.

Please consult your doctor and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) website for guidance on specific vaccines you may need.

Crime & Theft

We are traveling to areas that have little to no violent crime, and very little petty theft, but it is still important to be aware of your surroundings, especially in cities and on public transportation. We recommend carrying a safety whistle and a lock for your bag, as well as a money belt.

Drinking & Drugs

The use of illegal drugs is not permitted on any WanderRock trip, and is grounds for immediate removal from the program without a refund. If you choose to drink alcohol, we expect you to do so in a responsible manner and in line with the laws of the country we are currently in at the time. You will be expected to respect all laws of the country that we are currently in.

Problems & Emergency Contact Info

Should problems arise, whether that be an illness, injury, emotional overwhelming event, or lost baggage, the WanderRock guides accompanying you on your trip are your first place to turn to for help. If, for some reason, you don't feel safe turning to them for help, you may call our Stateside Support phone number for assistance, where someone from the WanderRock office will be standing by to help resolve your issue.

Medication

Some medicines (for example: Adderol) that are perfectly legal in the US are illegal and controlled substances in Japan, and bringing those medications into the country is highly illegal and will likely land you in jail. It is very important that if you take medication (particularly stimulants) that you be very aware of the legal restrictions and laws that may apply. During the application process we can walk you through this, but at the end of the day it is ultimately your responsibility to do due diligence and make sure you are complying with all relevant rules & regulations.
